A short little story, I used to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and there was no cure for this “invisible disease”. I remember my doctor telling me to take Loperamide. Loperamide is the active ingredient in many over the counter diarrhea relief medicines and would help ease some of my symptoms. I took the drug on and off because the most common way to resolve diarrhea is with over the counter medicine, and is safe when taken in recommended doses. I had no idea that recently it was found that you can get high from loperamide which is found in many over the counter medications for diarrhea relief if the dosage is too large.
Loperamide in certain dosages can mimic the effects of opioids when used in high doses. There have even been cases of teenagers using such products to get “high”. It has been said that loperamide may not directly address the underlying cause of diarrhea, rather it may only have an effect of relieving the symptoms. What Can You Do? Read the labels.
The FDA has asked retailers to stop selling largely sized of products that contain the anti-diarrheal loperamide but it not mandatory. So parents should really check labels and keep medications away from children and family to avoid any misuse or even abuse. How often do you check the labels for over-the-counter medicine?
