5 Styling Options During Your Transition

Having a hard time finding styling options during your transition? There are plenty of style options for you to explore while transitioning.  I transitioned for two years, from 2009-2011, with the help of my stylist.  Obviously, not everyone has the time or the resources for regular salon appointments, so here are a few options for styles to get you through the transition-

Braid-outs and Twist-outs– this involves braiding, twisting, or Bantu knotting your wet or damp hair with a moisturizing product and styler.  It will help you retain moisture and blend the two different textures. It’s a great way to achieve a soft, textured look.  While air drying is your best option and will help retain moisture and elasticity, using a bonnet dryer will speed things along on the days that you’re in a rush.

Heat Styling – This is what I did during my transition. It can be done with no heat damage. My stylist would blow dry and flat iron my hair during visits. This helped smooth new growth and is a great option for those who want to transition without looking like they are “transitioning”.  If you choose to use heat, make sure you start with the lowest heat setting possible for effectiveness, utilize a heat protectant and never touch-up dirty hair.  Only straighten clean hair.  Every time I visited the salon, I’d have my stylist cut a little more until one day I felt ready to be rid of all the relaxed ends.  The long-term transition was the best choice for me.

Roller Sets – This is a great way to blend the two textures of your hair while transitioning. I wore my hair in rod sets several times throughout my transition. This way is a bit more time-consuming but one of the healthier ways to transition.

Extensions and Weaves – I know of many transitioners who wear weaves to help aid in their journey. Don’t forget to care for and nurture your real hair underneath!

Protective Style– Once your hair is set (rods, rollers, twist-outs, etc.) or straightened, buns are an easy and chic way to protect your hair and maintain the set.  Be mindful of the amount of tension you place on your edges and be sure to re-position the bun (sometimes, high, sometimes low, etc.) so that one section of your hair doesn’t receive the bulk of the weight/tension from the pony tail holder.

Going to your Stylist – Many stylists will help you transition with the use of healthy hair products, treatments and techniques.

I hope this will give you a brief overview of your options for transitioning!
