Natural’s Spotlight: Todernesia

1. Tell me about yourself
I am a mother and I live in Columbus GA and I am a member of the best sorority Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. We are celebrating 100 years!!!

2. How long have you been natural?
I just did my big chop, so I’ve been completely natural for one week lol.

3. Did you transition or Big Chop?
I transitioned for 23 months. I was able to transition by wearing weaves, braids, and kinky twist. I refused to deal with my two textures,so keeping it covered and protected worked for me. I decided transitioned after being burned by relaxers and having under processed hair. Too much money to keep wasting.

4. What is your biggest hair challenge? How did you overcome your challenge?
My biggest hair challenge was making sure my natural and relaxed hair did not break off at the line of demarcation. I wanted to be able to cut my relaxed end off when I was ready and not because of breakage. I was able to defy breakage by making sure I kept my hair moisturized, deep conditioned, and not use too much heat.

5. What is your hair regimen?
I’m still developing my regimen but I wash my hair every two weeks unless I have a lot if product buildup. I deep condition at least once a month.Using a leave in conditioner is a must. I always use oils and butters to keep my hair soft and manageable. During the summer, I only co-wash and that seems to work. The humidity in GA is something serious, so my hair soaks up everything.

6. What is your favorite style?
My favorite style is a twist out. I’m having fun creating new styles. I’m having fun learning about my hair likes and dislikes.

7. What is your fashion style like?
My fashion is quick, easy and comfortable. I have a 9 month daughter who is crawling and into everything. I am also a teacher, so I have to be quick on my feet. I love dress up jeans and blazers. Jeans are a life savior.

8. Where can we find you on line? What else would you like to add?
I’m on IG@16paradise and FB @todernesiaford. I would love to have you follow me as I embrace my natural journey.

1. Tell me about yourself

Hello, my name is Jai. I am 29 years old and I currently reside in Orlando, FL. I was born and raised in New York, NY. I have a degree in Medical Specialization and Certified Medical Billing and coding. I’m working outside my field of study as a personal banker. I am wife and mom to the two special men in my life. God is my best friend. He reminds each day how much I need him and where I would be if I didn’t have his mercy & grace.

2. How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since April 2005 which is 8 years now.

3. Did you transition or Big Chop?
I decided to go natural back in April 2005 when I did my big chop. I had 1 inch of hair all over my head and had already stopped relaxing my hair. I actually did it on my 21st birthday. I told my best friend at the time I was wanted to try something new being I had always had long hair. Once I did it I hated how I looked with short hair it wasn’t until it started growing in, I started to embrace my short hair. I wore sew-ins in the beginning to cover it up until it got to my ear length where I could style it. I stopped relaxing my hair because once I seen I didn’t need it and I can get the same look that a flat iron or a blow out can made give me, I was like what’s the point?! Seeing my natural curls again made me super excited. I knew I would never perm again.

4. What is your biggest hair challenge? How did you overcome your challenge?

My biggest hair challenge was before I made the leap to do my BC. I was relaxing and coloring my hair and it started to literally fall out in clumps. My hair was so damaged at this point even though it was long. I was almost ashamed how bad I got my hair to look. I overcame that by cutting it off and starting over.

5. What is your hair regimen?
I like to wash my hair every week or every other week depending on what style I’m rocking. I use Shea Moisturizer Curl enhancing smoothie or Cantu Shea butter leave in condition to lock in moisture when using my Bantu knot outs and twist outs, if needed I use Castro oil. My shampoo and conditioner I use right now is Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Ultra Shea. When my hair is straight I use an anti frizz heat protector by shine, blow dry hair on a low setting and flat iron it. If I was to use heat I only put it on once and rock it like that for a good two and a half weeks by wrapping my hair at night to preserve. My favorite products right now are Shea Moisturizer Curl enhancing smoothie, catwalk curls amplifier, ecostyler gel, and Castro oil.

6. What is your favorite style?
My absolute favorite hairstyles are my wash n go’s and my Bantu Knot outs. Wash n go’s are effortless for me my hair does what I expect it to do when it’s wet. As for the Bantu Knots my first one was perfect and it only got better when I practice to see how to get the fullness, tightness, and shine. I also like wearing my blow outs or wrapped hair.

7. What is your fashion style like?
I am a very sophisticated classy woman and my style changes without warning. You can see me in Ralph Lauren Polo one day with chuck Taylor’s and the next day I’m in a chic tailored dress or a maxi dresses. So I don’t like to categorize myself in one area. I love fashion and I throw what ever I like together whether its liked by others. My overall style Fabulous!

8. Where can we find you on line? What else would you like to add?
We are all created in God’s image so no matter what people say about you love who you are as a natural. Whether you are transitioning or did a BC stay encouraged it may be hard at first but surround yourself around positive supporters and you won’t be sorry. You will love the choice you made.

So I used this to set my hair for a twist and curl. I washed with Cream of Nature with Argan Oil, and conditioned with Design Essentials Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion. I did about 30 Twists. I parted each portion and added the mousse. Here were the results after my hair dried and I released the twists

Overall I loved the results. I had nice fluffy twists! I will reuse this product!! Happy Thursday Naturalistas!! Enjoy Your DAY!!20130326_094923
